Second of a Two-Part Series Rittvik and corporate ISKCON are two factions claiming to succeed Srila Prabhupada’s philosophical and institutional structure for spreading Krishna consciousness. As mentioned in Part One, many of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples became alienated by all the zonal acharya abuses, especially in the early Eighties, and left corporate ISKCON to hear from Prabhupada’s godbrothers. Moving into the late Eighties and the Nineties, some of these expatriate disciples, as well as direct initiates of those godbrothers, began to accept disciples. This loose confederation continues to act in defiance of the GBC, opening temples that compete with corporate ISKCON. Although most of these people are actually wild cards, their group can be lumped together under the term neo-Gaudiya matha. Besides their tendency to offensively minimize Srila Prabhupada (as allegedly being on the same level as his godbrothers), they all minimize and dismiss his conclusive statements that the jiva-tattva originates in the spiritual world. Smorgasbord Old and New For many years, there have been a sizable number of weak-minded devotees who, in the name of not faultfinding, say that all, or at least two, of these abovementioned groups (“ISKCON,” neo-Gaudiya, and rittvik) are bona fide. Thus, they will attend functions held by those particular cults. As such, they eat the fare there and have been compared to people who go to a smorgasbord in order to sample the preparations made available. We have thus given them that designation: Smorgasbord. A little later in this article, we are going to refer to this group, however, as older smorgasbord. After the initial blitzkrieg of rittvikism in the Nineties, many devotees outside of corporate ISKCON have recognized the flaws in that post-modern sahajiya philosophy (crypto-Kartabhaja). In this way, there is now a significant number who are inimical to, and outside the control of, corporate ISKCON--but who also reject rittvik, as well as the neo-Gaudiya matha. This group has a smorgasbord aspect to it as well, because these individuals have their own set of malleable and compromised philosophical conclusions. Their apa-siddhantas allow for many varieties of wrong conclusions and applications regarding reality or ontological truth. For the most part, they don’t feel anyone is really qualified, or more qualified than themselves, spiritually advanced enough to engage anyone in genuine devotional service--or even elevate newcomers by preaching and taking service from them. This makes these fellows more averse to the principle of spiritual authority than even the rittviks. This is because most of the various rittvik sects have some semblance of an authority structure. More dedicated rittvik followers allow themselves to be engaged by their temple president. The designated older devotee who performs the formal initiation ceremony (a post-modern alleged rittvik) is usually accorded some degree of respect and considered a more advanced devotee. In terms of the real Vaishnava standards and philosophy, however, this is all largely a charade, because, as described earlier, the entire rittvik practice is anything but bona fide. Nevertheless, there is, in it, a semblance of the authority structure that characterized Srila Prabhupada’s original movement. On the other hand, rejection of any traditional Vaishnava authority arrangement very much characterizes the vast majority of those who do not accept any of the three prominent (unauthorized) factions, abovementioned. Those devotees--with this attitude of rejecting anything and everyone--have been through corporate ISKCON’s mill, but they also distrust the rittviks and neo-Gaudiya matha. One of these older devotees runs a prominent website, whose title includes a certain heavenly body. This website is very influential and prevalent; it gets many hits daily. Therefore, we differentiate this group from older smorgasbord with the appendage solar smorgasbord. Solar smorgasbord shares the rittvik cynicism that no one among Prabhupada’s disciples is really advanced, what to speak of realized, in Krishna consciousness. Any devotee who is considered (by those who listen to and take instruction from him) to be at least somewhat advanced is inevitably compared to the cheating zonal acharyas. This solar smorgasbord group can now be considered a fourth deviant cult (or apa-sampradaya), and it generally leans toward a more egalitarian form of management. The trick to having some influence within the solar smorgasbord, therefore, is to succeed at appearing the Orwellian best equal amongst all the other equals. In this regard, the free speech environment hosted by the site editor makes him the de facto non-leading leader of solar smorgasbord. He also falsely considers himself a shiksa-guru, differentiating the platform of realization held jointly by any genuine guru (vartma-pradarsaka, shiksha, or diksa). Guru is one in realization but can be different in function. If you choose to be magnanimous towards this group--and we are not--it can be imagined that they are attempting to take exclusive shelter of Srila Prabhupada without the deviation of having him posthumously give alleged diksa. Unfortunately, virtually all of the solar smorgasbord--if, indeed, not all of it--is dragging along a soul-killing load of misconceptions that they imbibed during their service to and close association with corporate ISKCON leaders. They fail to recognize this, however. Many solar smorgasborders, those who came to some kind of what appeared to be Krishna consciousness after Prabhupada’s departure, continue to use their so-called initiated names, even though they now reject their previous GBC-selected “guru.” The deplorable situation of these people was discussed in detail within our Smorgasbord series posted here about a year ago. Solar smorgasbord has almost as many philosophies and emphases as it does followers, adherents, and devotees. It is much like New Age, where the joke is that, in a room of ten New Agers, there will be fifteen different conclusions. Also, as with New Age, wishful thinking abounds in solar smorgasbord. Their general position is that, “I am following Srila Prabhupada to my best ability; he is very merciful and will surely deliver me because of my sacrifice and service.” The contamination of serving deviants like the zonals and/or other diseased corporate ISKCON “diksa” appointees is all glossed over by solar smorgasbord. Similarly, numerous instructions of Srila Prabhupada about surrendering to a genuine spiritual master are minimized, and what is cited to rationalize this is the track record of corporate ISKCON and the neo-Gaudiya matha. The solar smorgasborders don’t admit this minimization anywhere in their treatises, however, and such omission casts extreme doubt on their convenient assertion that they are following buddhi-yoga to their best ability. For the most part, hard-core diksa-guru-less solar smorgasbord adherents hardly see the necessity of seeking out a bona fide spiritual master or developing the requisite sincerity to have the Supreme Lord arrange for them to contact one. Remember, these people are not rittviks, although the solar smorgasbord regularly allows rittviks to post on its online site, without pointing out the deviations in those writings. They consistently fail to see their diksa-guru-less situation as ultimately self-generated; still smarting from their many bad experiences with previous so-called gurus (corporate ISKCON gurus), they tend to blame their situations on that cult. They are convinced that they are sincerely trying to take up the bhakti process, despite being in a position that would have been considered fallen during Srila Prabhupada’s manifest presence. Srila Prabhupada’s statements regarding their situations, however, have none of the grey areas that the solar smorgasborders place their faith in at all times: “When actually you want Krishna seriously--you do not know who is guru--then Krishna will give you a guru. Just like Dhruva Maharaja. He was advised by his mother that, ‘If you go to the forest, you can see God.’ So, he went there. But when he was very serious, then Krishna sent him Narada Muni. So, if you are actually serious about Krishna, then Krishna will send you some of His representative, and he will take charge of you. That is the process. If you do not find a guru, that means Krishna is not yet pleased . . . you are not serious.” Conversation with Bajaj and Bhusan (at their home), September 11, 1972, Arlington, Texas (emphasis added) “Yes, naturally, if you are cheated, you become suspicious, but this does not mean that if you are cheated once, you will always be cheated. You should find someone genuine. But to come to Krishna consciousness, you must be either very fortunate or well-aware of this science.” Science of Self Realization, Chapter Two, "Choosing a Spiritual Master--Saints and Swindlers" (emphasis added) The last quote indicates that there were two divisions of devotees initiated by Srila Prabhupada (during his manifest presence). From my own practical experience in dealing with no small number of these devotees, it is my considered view now, judging by the results, that most of them were in the category of “very fortunate” when they came to Krishna consciousness in the late Sixties and early to mid-Seventies. This was clearly demonstrated when virtually all of them, ignorantly yet voluntarily, went right down into the zonal acharya rabbit hole, due to either fanaticism or sentimentality--in no small part because none of them were “well-aware of this science.” In other words, of the four types of people who come to Krishna consciousness (described in the Bhagavad-gita, 7.16), hardly any of these devotees were in search of the Absolute Truth or well-aware of the spiritual science when they came into contact with His Divine Grace Prabhupada and Krishna consciousness. What to speak of the God-realized mahabhagavat, even a brahma-realized madhyam adhikari is an extremely rare personality at this time. On the other hand, today’s practically uncountable dull-witted people, who are led by and populate corporate ISKCON and the neo-Gaudiya matha, all have a very cheap conception of guru, especially when the pretenders who lead them are so commonly and/or ecclesiastically available. They easily convince these dull-witted people that initiation is available, the opportunity to become linked to the disciplic succession has been made easy. It is described differently in the Srimad Bhagavatam, however, where Srila Prabhupada translates: “Sometimes in autumn, the falls come down from the top of the hill to supply clean water, and sometimes they stop. Similarly, sometimes great saintly persons distribute clear knowledge, and sometimes they are silent.” Krsna Trilogy, Book #1, Chapter Twenty, “Description of Autumn” (Srimad Bhagavatam, 10.20.36) Although providing little solace, at least the rittviks and the solar smorgasbord have come to the right conclusion that the genuinely great saintly person or persons have been silent since late 1977. This conclusion, most unfortunately, has come to them the hard way, and, as a result, their initial innocence in Krishna consciousness has now been overcoated by a thick and hard-hearted cynicism. The cynical solar smorgasbord adherents have limitless rationalizations as to why seeking out a physically manifest pure devotee can and must be minimized at the current time. Generally they say, “None are available” or “Show me one!” They expect some kind of miracle easy solution like the “very fortunate” opportunity that was available when Srila Prabhupada was supplying that clear water referred to in his Krishna Book translation, above. The reality, however, is that they are not at all serious about finding a genuine guru (“If you do not find a guru, that means Krishna is not yet pleased . . . you are not serious”). Solar smorgasbord is in the same orbit as rittvik: Both groups have spun off corporate ISKCON and are now traveling around that same psychotic center. Although both groups generally understand that “guru by institutional appointment” deviates from the standard, rittviks just replace one type of phony institutional arrangement with another. Many cynical solar smorgasbord devotees were genuinely initiated disciples of Srila Prabhupada--and, as such, have no need to seek out a diksa guru. But they neglect to recognize that their cynicisms (as well as other malefic psychic infections) are a result of previously serving the deviants. Both previous to and after the departure of Srila Prabhupada, these cynics were under the influence of, mis-trained by, and contaminated by the monsters who eventually became zonal acharyas. They served men who usurped and diverted the Krishna consciousness movement from the absolute standard and turned it into something pernicious and mundane. These cynics helped those evil men destroy Srila Prabhupada’s movement from the inside. However, there are also cynical adherents of the solar smorgasbord who were not initiated by Srila Prabhupada; they require reassurance that they are still serious devotees. The editor of the solar smorgasbord site thus puts forward a number of posts that ameliorate that need for these people, providing them that desired reassurance. There we find statements such as: “I assert that the ‘traditionalist’ exponents who are emphatic about the prerequisite for a sincere truth seeker to search out and surrender to a ‘living’ diksa guru should be looked upon with a high degree of suspicion. More than likely, they can be accurately identified as being one of a combination of the following: a religionist, a cultist in the guise of a disciple, less intelligent, and/or any of a variety of types of suppressionists.” Strict adherents of the Vedic and Vaishnava philosophy are profoundly shocked to read such an outrageous and offensive statement. The site editor and author (of the above statement describing ‘traditionalists’) had previously experienced first-hand the abuses of corporate ISKCON. Unfortunately he, like the rittviks, is throwing the sampradaya standard out with the dirty bath water he (and they) paddled in for decades; it is only a question of how far it is being thrown away. The ‘traditionalist’ quote is quite indicative of the solar smorgasbord philosophical position and approach. Like the rittviks, politics plays a big role. “Reform” is the political buzz word that gets the most attention. Remaining in a subconscious psychic orbit around corporate ISKCON, solar smorgasbord is obsessed with the idea of reforming it. Similarly, some rittviks (IRM) once thought they would take over corporate ISKCON and everyone would then join them; their group was thus called the “ISKCON Reform Movement.” The history of so much philosophical warping, often by writers who appear to be intellectuals (such as demonstrated in the ‘traditionalist’ quote), can be ultimately traced back to the vitiated GBC itself. Rittvik and solar smorgasbord are just going with the flow that they falsely believe they have rejected. Certainly taking initiation from “gurus” like corporate ISKCON’s post-holders must be strictly avoided. However, counseling people to avoid the authorized process is hardly either Vedic or Vaishnava and also falls into the atheistic (nastika) category. As Srila Prabhupada said above, “You should find someone genuine.” The nastika bija is just one disastrous seed imbibed by deviated malcontents (often themselves writers) who were infected by their previous bad association and/or previous masters in corporate ISKCON. There are a number of other writers who post on the solar website who vehemently attack anyone who reminds diksa guru-less devotees to seek out a genuine spiritual master. They also blaspheme the literal Vaishnava philosophy and practice as they put forward a very dangerous spiritual position. They inevitably point out how the supposed gurus offered by corporate ISKCON have cheated so many and that it is better to simply worship Srila Prabhupada and avoid initiation. Apparently, due to their many years of bad experience in and around corporate ISKCON, when there is some philosophical discussion, corporate ISKCON is the only context that they can conceive of in relation to that discussion. This is similar to someone who has recently had a bad love affair. When the general subject of love comes up, he immediately begins talking about the bad behavior of his ex, and it quickly becomes impossible to for him to think or talk about anything else. Certainly one should feel compassion towards such spiritually “damaged goods” devotees, but we should also understand they deserve the difficulties that their past dull-wittedness has created for them. “Krishna is pleased, I am pleased, why are you displeased?” These people drank the kool-aid offered by the zonal acharyas and/or their immediate successors. They continued to choke it down, sometimes for decades. To expand upon the love analogy, they stuck with abusive lovers, even though healthy self-esteem should have dictated that they leave. These people are now quite antagonistic towards the literal application of the Vaishnava philosophy and especially any messengers who remind them of it. Such messengers will be denigrated by ad-homonym attacks, which will usually compare them to phony gurus. In particular, solar smorgasbord writers give us insights into the dark spiritual disease that they carry in their astral bodies. In complete delusion, they think that they still were engaged in pure service to Krishna through decades of submission to corporate ISKCON’s Putanas, externally beautiful witches who pretended to be the caretakers of Prabhupada’s movement. Furthermore, the solar smorgasborders are convinced that all of those years spent in that bad service and association have made them more advanced (and able to better speak on) Krishna conscious philosophy. Many of them believe that whatever bogus initiation they received from corporate ISKCON appointees, along with subsequent designations such as “brahmana” or “sannyasi,” should accord them the same respect due someone genuinely initiated by Srila Prabhupada. In this way, the current environment can accurately be described as a type of zombie sideshow, where ignorance and upadhis (false designations) are, across the board, accepted as knowledge and badges of spiritual advancement. The solar smorgasbord editor is one of the prominent ringmasters of this circus. If you are not dead enough for his taste, you will, within time, find yourself unable to post on his site, even if your articles meet all the advertised criteria for acceptance there. In regard to figuratively rejecting formal diksa at the current time, the philosophy and steps of spiritual advancement (adau sraddha, sadhu sanga, etc.) do not change because so-called zonal acharyas hijacked Srila Prabhupada’s movement. The real philosophy is sanatana or eternal, and Srila Prabhupada made this point repeatedly. Someone who honestly repeats his instructions, by saying that uninitiated people should seek out a bona fide guru, is not “a religionist, a cultist in the guise of a disciple, less intelligent, and/or any of a variety of types of suppressionists.” It is only in the convoluted, damaged goods mindset of those who are bent out of shape by corporate ISKCON’s pliers that this kind of sadhu ninda is pushed--in the name of intelligence, knowledge, and realization. Advocating surrender to a guru has nothing to do with what has gone on in corporate ISKCON or the neo-Gaudiya matha--and it never will have. Full-ledged members of the solar smorgasbord are right there with the rittviks, in terms of their anger and antagonism toward important and essential aspects of pure Krishna conscious philosophy. They do not directly say that the philosophy should be completely ignored or rejected; they instead insidiously counsel that it shouldn’t be followed in the current circumstances. These circumstances have caused them all to become spiritually blind. Post-Rittvik “Christian” Influences Many critics of rittvik have compared it to Christianity. During Srila Prabhupada’s manifest presence, devotees preached that, in today’s Christianity, there are no pure representatives of Christ who can actually connect followers with the original teachings. This is exactly how the rittviks and solar smorgasborders characterize the bona fide initiates of Srila Prabhupada. Nevertheless, fanatical Christians claim that they follow Jesus (a departed spiritual master) and get the same benefits as devotees. Just like the rittviks, these post-modern Christians only have stand-ins--in the form of priests, popes, and ministers--who are acknowledged to be worldly people. Virtually all Christian sects preach a cheap institutional form of salvation, where one is guaranteed to go to heaven if baptized, saved, or if regularly attending confession. The personal guidance of church hierarchy remains minimal for these congregationalists; for the most part, there is little change in their materialistic consciousness after conversion or confirmation. More casual groups are even further relaxed in terms of what standards are expected of them; simply saying you “accept Jesus in your heart” secures the follower inclusion. The fame-crazed leaders of many of these sects consciously ignore Christ’s warnings about serving mammon, misdirecting followers by saying that God will help them achieve riches. Because the rittviks carry over some of the temple rituals and ceremonies that were present in the Sixties and Seventies, they attempt to divert comparisons to Christianity. In rittvik, there are fire sacrifices before the Deity. Spiritual names are given and vows are taken. The only thing missing, however, is the physical initiating spiritual master, the diksa guru. Of course, leaving out that most important person in a genuine disciple’s spiritual life is no small omission, is it? The rittviks spin their alleged superiority to Christians very effectively as far as their dull-witted followers go, but educated devotees see through the whole makeshow quite easily. Several years ago, another spiritually damaged goods individual attempted to bridge the gap between corporate ISKCON and rittvik via a position paper, which became known as Prominent Link. Not unexpectedly, it was soon rejected by both groups. What is noteworthy about this, however, was that it, more or less, said that the formal initiation ceremony of the rittviks was unnecessary. Based on a few select quotes, Prominent Link advocates claim that one only need reach a point in understanding the philosophy (that they call “divya jnana”) in order for this as-good-as initiated status to take affect for each and every one of them. But the real question is whether today’s devotees have any hope of getting there after having their convictions and faith mangled by corporate ISKCON’s institutional soul-crushing machine. Certainly, as was witnessed during Srila Prabhupada’s manifest presence, people who took wholeheartedly to the process could easily get to that level of knowledge, even prior to the formal ceremony. Without the physical manifestation of the pure devotee to provide validation that someone is providentially destined to be formally initiated by him--and, therefore, is already initiated in spirit--there must be a gulf of doubt, especially in the living dead environment we are enduring at this time. There is also no indication that the author of Prominent Link has considered the effects of serving sahajiyas like the zonal acharyas and taking initiation from one, as he did. He still considers his so-called diksa and siksa gurus to all be bona fide devotees, helpful to his spiritual growth. This is but another symptom of a dull-witted lack of understanding. For whatever reason, the leaders of solar smorgasbord do not embrace the Prominent Link hypothesis. This is perhaps because its founder has his own small institutional umbrella that does not mesh well with that cult. The founder of Prominent Link presents himself as a type of leader--and he certainly is one--therefore, immediately, he is suspect among the solar smorgasbord group. There are some in solar smorgasbord who have never accepted any kind of initiation, and many who have been so-called initiated by corporate ISKCON’s post holders. It is almost certain that these people entertain notions, by virtue of the same selected quotes cited by Prominent Link, that they are on the same spiritual platform as genuinely initiated disciples. However, Srila Prabhupada was quite contemptuous of this idea: Disciple: His question was that, ‘Can you take initiation by
accepting the spiritual master in your heart, without actually taking . . .?’ The similarity of rittvik to modern Christianity is rather obvious, despite the denials of the rittviks. Prominent Link, however, appears to be fully implementing the Christian model of “connection” to a bona fide spiritual master--no physically manifest spiritual master, no sacrifice, no spiritual name--just “I know that Srila Prabhupada accepts me.” Solar smorgasbord authors also sometimes defend this position quite militantly, as if it is completely shastric and authorized. All this spotlights the further devolution of what Srila Prabhupada originally presented. Not coincidentally, many of the people advocating these concoctions were once Christians themselves. Perhaps the next step will be to actively encourage material desires. To some extent, this is already being done: Certain corporate ISKCON temples perform or allow materialistic non-Vaishnava yajnas in exchange for donations--from their Hindu patrons, of course. Churchianity Prabhupada: Yes. That will depend on your purified preaching
activities. If you again become materially victimized, then you cannot do it.
If you remain on the spiritual platform, if you try, then it will increase. Anandambudhi-vardhanam.
It will increase. As soon as there is any contemplation of sense gratification,
then the spirit will be lost. Then instead of Christianity, it will be "Churchianity,"
officially going to the church, doing nothing . . . and gradually nobody will
go. This conversation presciently describes the state of corporate ISKCON’s current preaching activities. More or less, they are showing the Deity mostly to the Hindus for money. “And somebody will come, collect some money, and then there is no business -- go away.” The philosophy and shastric injunctions which compose the genuine preaching activities have all become subordinated to the allegedly infallible profile of the institution’s governing body. What the zonals and GBC did is far beyond mere contemplation of sense gratification, and, as a result, his prediction is coming to pass: “Gradually nobody will go.” And what happened to those who tried to point out that the zonals were polluting the purity? They were run off and vilified as being “poisonous.” The solar smorgasbord now says the same thing about the same devotees, what they previously said while followers of the zonal acaryas. Again, this syndrome is quantum levels beyond mere sense gratification. The above conversation with Rupanuga prabhu makes clear that corporate ISKCON will never amount to much in the long run of Vaishnava history. Just like what happened to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta’s Gaudiya matha, it has already well established itself as but another pseudo-devotional embarrassment. Nevertheless, thousands of people followed the zonals down their path paved with good intentions, and many continue to follow those who have taken over the reins of power (after the zonals were thoroughly exposed and upended). They all still foolishly believe that a corporate institution must always maintain an intrinsic spiritual connection simply because it was founded by a pure devotee. Despite so many deviations from shastra, bare-faced contradictions, as well as ruthlessness and hypocrisy of the GBC, these people cling to this delusion. They are cheated, because their finer discrimination (viveka) has been rendered inoperable; they are thus accurately defined as the dull-witted, anudita-viveka. “Fortunate means everyone has got his discretion. So, one who has the fortune to discriminate, then he can understand Krishna very easily.” Lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam, 6.1.15 in London, July 30, 1971 Any number of others have left after extended periods in corporate ISKCON’s psychic prison. In resentment, anger, and frustration, they have populated the rittvik movement, the neo-Gaudiya matha, and/or the solar smorgasbord. After being more than sufficiently bewildered and polluted by corporate ISKCON’s deviant conceptions, they still stubbornly continue to think that they were engaged in pure devotional service while within its clutches. Because the number of such people is so vast, and because their desire is so great to think that they were nevertheless serving Prabhupada’s real mission, this contaminated consciousness defines a type of mass psychosis. Of course, the leaders of the major factions are more than happy to engender and entertain these delusions on the part of current or former followers. After all, politics requires warm bodies. These deviant factions now include solar smorgasbord. Because these people fail to understand either the fundamental deviations of corporate ISKCON or the effects of serving such a blatant deviation from Srila Prabhupada’s original presentation, they see absolutely no need to undergo any type of correction or purification. They foolishly think that every other devotee is just like them: Atmavat manyate jagat. They completely fail to see the value of approaching those who never fell under the spell of the zonal acharya’s witchcraft, and many of them project a kind of militant yet dull-witted attitude: Disciple:
They also say that no one can ever be pure, that everyone is doomed to be a
sinner. The real Hare Krishna movement is not corporate ISKCON. The bona fide distinction of the Vaishnava Foundation is that it is led by someone who never accepted the zonal acharyas and who never believed that the GBC had any intrinsic absolute authority. Sriman Kailasa Candra dasa has always kept Srila Prabhupada and his philosophy foremost, and he has delivered the goods to those who have listened to and followed him. He never allowed any GBC or alleged pet disciple to become his via-medium in seva under the working principles of buddhi-yoga to Srila Prabhupada. It is for this reason that the Vaishnava Foundation is presenting the original pre-1978, pre-zonal acharya, philosophy and potency of the Hare Krishna movement of Krishna consciousness. Kailasa prabhu was targeted in the 1979 GBC resolutions for “poisonous” preaching, because, in no small measure, he pointed out some of the deviations of the zonal acharyas. A position paper, mostly written by Kailasa prabhu, was presented to the Commission by senior devotees at that time. He was ostracized for sticking with Srila Prabhupada and, as a result, underwent excruciating difficulties after his excommunication from corporate ISKCON. The conviction and realization resulting from those trials by fire are what undergird this article and our presentation as a whole. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his real movement. OM TAT SAT
